60 mln euros end up in “smoke”: Import figure reveals cost of habit for Albanians
Albanians consume around 60 million euros in tobacco per year.
Data from the Institute of Statistics refer to 2017 and show that tobacco imports in Albania reached the stunning amount of ALL 7.7 billion.
Considering that the demand for tobacco in the country mainly complements imported tobacco, then this is more or less the value of tobacco consumed by Albanians in a year.
Domestic tobacco, which is largely artisanal, has a relatively low nominal value, which does not greatly affect the overall figure.
Regarding the countries from which Albania import tobacco and cigarettes, Greece ranks first with 2.26 billion leks, or about 17.4 million euros.
The second place is held by Poland with ALL 2.21 billion.
Turkey with ALL 960 million, Germany with ALL 820 million and Switzerland with 280 million ALL close the first 5 spots.
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Ukraine, Portugal and India conclude the list of the 10 countries importing tobacco to Albania.
