78% of Tirana citizens do not trust courts: UNDP survey
A UNDP survey shows that the more Albanians have contact with the judiciary, the less trust they have in justice.
The survey was carried out on a sample of about 1,800 people and it points to the fact that 78% of residents of Tirana do not trust the courts.
“We asked people if they trust the justice system and the figures are too big. About 70% of respondents said they did not trust the system. About 78% of respondents in Tirana replied that they did not trust the justice system. The same response was provided by about 74% of respondents in areas outside Tirana,” said Sinisa Miatovic, UNDP representative.
“Let’s see one of the most interesting and weird results of the survey. It is widely thought that people do not trust the system because they do not know it, but the opposite is true. The more they know the system, the more they do not trust it. 81% of people who have had direct experience with the justice system do not trust it. While the figure of those who did not have a direct experience but expressed disbelief to it is 66%,” said Sinisa Miatovic, UNDP representative
The UNDP survey aims to measure the access of Albanians to the justice system, especially those in need.
The findings will be taken into account in the draft law on legal aid, which soon will be passed on to the Assembly.
