Air and sea transport collapse – The number of passengers drops by 48% and 86% at the peak of the tourist season
The latest data from the Institute of Statistics show that the number of flights during August has almost halved, down by 48.8%. During August, 2287 flights were performed, out of 3160 that were performed in August last year, when the pandemic was not even thought of.
In August 2020, air passenger transport accounts for 74.3% of total transport. The number of passengers who have traveled by airline in the eight months of 2020 is 915,646 passengers, decreasing by 58.8%, compared to the eight months of 2019.
But, not only air transport has suffered a blow, as sea transport bears after the minus sign, the figure 86.1. The decline is drastic, and refers only to the month of August, the peak of the tourist season. Throughout the first eight months of this year, there are 77% fewer passengers who have traveled by sea, to and from our country, say the latest data from INSTAT.
