Airline market, Statistics: Around three million passengers arrived for 2017
The airline market in Albania numbered nearly three million passengers last year.
According to Institute of Statistics, the airline market rose for the seventh consecutive year. By 2017, the number of passengers increased by 12%. The market is growing especially by expanding tourism. Data released last week showed that the number of foreign visitors reached a record low of nearly six million. But the number of Albanian visits abroad increased again for 2018 and amounted to 5.4 million.
The airline market potentials are still large, however, at the moment, the lack of an alternative and more economical airport for international flights remains an obstacle. The Civil Aviation Authority has finally undertaken some efforts to liberalize services at Tirana Airport, which will lower operator costs and ticket prices. Meanwhile, the operation of a second airport will take at least a few years. Kukës Airport operation will be entrusted to a consortium of private operators. The winners of the race were announced at the end of December, but the contract with them has not yet been signed.
Meanwhile, shipping for the previous year was stagnant. This travel route was used by about 1.5 million passengers, up by only 1% compared to the previous year. Maritime transport is used especially in the movements of citizens with Italy and less with Greece during the tourist season.
