Albania marks minimal progress in the rule of law: Rule of Law Index 2017-2018
Albania has won 4 positions in the “Rule of Law Index 2017-2018”, published by the Justice Project in the World, which is one of the most important bodies in this regard.
In this year’s newly published report, the country is ranked 68th among 113 countries around the world.
In the region, meanwhile, in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Albania ranks 6th among 13 countries, leaving behind only Serbia.
But while Albania gains points in the overall index with sub-indicators as fundamental rights, it loses significantly points with other sub-indicators such as corruption.
The sub-indicator that measures the lack of corruption ranks Albania as the 94th country in the world, among 113 economies.
The country is not only the last in the region in this regard, but also the third country from the bottom in Europe, better only than Moldova and Ukraine in terms of corruption, which continues to be a major plague in the country’s society and economy, much more than in any other country in the region, being close to the levels of African countries or Latin America.
However, a year ago, Albania ranked 98th in the world in this indicator.
As far as corruption is concerned, in Albania the most problematic is considered by the legislature, followed by the judiciary, the executive and eventually the law enforcement authorities, although this is the only sub-indicator that has declines compared to the previous year.
