Albanian Parliament begins the review of the law “On Citizenship”, facilities for Albanians living abroad

The Assembly has put on the agenda the new law “On Citizenship. The draft has been submitted to the Assembly by the government since August 2019 and aims to bring a series of innovations to the current law that has been in force since 1998.

The drafters of the law underline in the accompanying report that the current law does not provide a solution for cases of acquiring citizenship based on origin.

The draft facilitates the procedures for obtaining citizenship for persons who have renounced Albanian citizenship and have acquired a foreign citizenship, while in the following they seek to regain Albanian citizenship.

Meanwhile, the draft also brings solutions to the problems created in practice, for the submission of a request for renunciation of Albanian citizenship in case of divorced parents. Currently, the legislation requires that the request must be submitted by both parents, but this provision has created problems in case of disagreement and / or failure to find one parent.
