Albanians spend 3/4 of income for basic needs, half for food: INSTAT
Much of the monthly spending on consumption by Albanian families goes to subsistence needs, leaving little room for luxury and entertainment.
Of the 12 main groups of goods and services, 71.5% of the country’s monthly consumption goes for the basics such as “Non-alcoholic food and drinks”, “Housing, water, electricity and paid rent”, “Health”, “Transport” and “Education”.
Expenditures for food account for half of the total monthly consumption for Albanian families.
Throughout the country, this group has 48.7% of purchases and is growing year after year due to rising prices.
The region that spends most of its income in food is Vlora with 53.3%, followed by Korca with 53.1% of monthly consumption.
Less in this group spend households in Tirana, where food accounts for only 44.5% of monthly spending.
In Vlora, Albanians pay more for electricity, water and rents, even more than in the capital. For this group, spending reaches 11.9% of monthly consumption.
Meanwhile, the district that spends less on bills and rent, is Gjirokastra. In Gjirokastra, these savings are offset by transport costs, which account for 8.4% of monthly consumption.
Regarding healthcare, the lack of infrastructure in remote areas of Dibra puts spending on medicines at only 1.9% of monthly consumption in this area.
Meanwhile, the area where the most paid base for this basic service is Berat.
In addition to healthcare, Berat pays more for education, with 3.1% of total costs.
Regarding other goods and services which are considered luxury expense, residents in Dibra spend twice in “Alcoholic beverages and tobacco”, with 10.6% of the monthly consumption.
Tirana spends more on “Clothing and Footwear” (6.2%).
Gjirokastra and Kukes pay more for “Furniture, household appliances” (5.9%).
Kukes pays more for communication (4.1%).
In the capital, people spend more on “Entertainment and Culture” (3.6%), while in Berat is spent more on “Restaurants and Hotels” (5%).
Other goods and maintenance services cost more in Lezha , where they account for 7.6% of monthly expenses.
