Asylum applications fall by 80% – Albania, the country with the largest decline in claims in Q2
The latest data from the European Statistics Office show that the pandemic has significantly curbed the flow of Albanian asylum seekers to Europe, but has not been able to stop it. During the period April-June, official data show that France continues to remain in first place as a preference of Albanian asylum seekers, followed by Germany and in third place Italy. France holds almost half of the requests, more precisely 44% of the total, with a full 205 applications in the second quarter.
In previous quarters, the figures were several times higher and even often exceeding the threshold of 1 thousand applications in a quarter. Germany counts only 140 applications, while Italy 55 in total in three months. These three countries account for 86% of the total, while during the entire second quarter of the year, Albanian asylum seekers for the first time are counted in about 465, from about 2,320 in the first quarter. The decline in quarterly terms is fixed at 80%, and in annual terms at 89%. Albania appears as the country of origin with the largest decline in demand after the outbreak of the pandemic.
