Banking system main pillar of domestic public borrowing
The unfavorable movements in international markets over the last few years, and in order to lessen risks, has prompted the Albanian government to channel borrowing into the domestic market.
Referring to official public debt indicators, it is noticed that the main burden is kept by domestic borrowing.
Of the total public borrowing stock, which was 1 trillion and ALL 67 billion at the end of June, the largest share of belonged to domestic borrowing, amounting to ALL 547.8 billion.
While external debt at the end of the semester turned out to be ALL 491.9 billion.
Considering the sharing of the domestic borrowing we notice that the banking system holds the main weight with 60.86%, while non-bank financial institutions account for 15.75% of this debt.
Households also hold a low share of government borrowing at 15.01%, while the Central Bank has a weight of 8.37% of this debt.
Public debt has gone down to 66.9% of the Gross Domestic Product in the middle of this year, while in the budget of this year, the government predicted that debt should fall to no less than 69.1% of Gross Domestic Product.
