Beer consumption on a sharp rise in the first semester of 2017

The high temperatures of recent months have contributed to the rise in the consumption of beverages in Albania.

Thus, beer consumption has grown during the first half of this year, and according to official statistics of the General Directory of Customs the amount of imported beer amounts to 4 331 thousand liters, or 582 thousand liters more than the same period of last year.

According to these data, in the first 6 months of the year the domestic market has imported 3 749 thousand liters of beer.

But even though the customs administration provides only the imported quantity of this product, this data does not specify the consumed quantity, something that would highlight the level of the domestic production.

The beer market is among the most coveted and discussions on beer excise at a time when fiscal package is being discussed are fierce.

Domestic producers have always complained that a dishonest market has been established in the country, and they have repeatedly demanded the reduction of the excise tax on this product, claiming that the move would result in the growth of domestic product and higher employment.

At present, domestic beer production is divided between four main companies: Birra Tirana, Birra Stela, Birra Korça, Birra Kaon or Elbar.

But a high percentage in the market is also held by imported beers, which in a few cases are favored by the lowest excise tax rate, compellingly competing domestic production.
