Business Sales – High growth even in the second quarter
The Albanian manufacturing sector’s index of sales grew at high rates in the second quarter, signaling satisfactory growth rates for this quarter as well.
According to data from Institute of Statistics, the industry increased sales by 12.6% on an annual basis, relying again to a large extent on high electricity production.
Sales in this branch increased by more than 38% compared to the second quarter of last year. Even the other two branches of industry, extracting and processing, reported good results. In particular, the branch of the main weight, the processing industry increased sales by 15.5%.
Meanwhile, negative developments came only from the construction sector, where sales fell by nearly 5%. However, in the case of construction, consideration should also be given to the effect of the high comparative base. Last year was an electoral year, coupled with a growing stream of investment in infrastructure for the second quarter. Generally, the ratio between ordinary and electoral years brings such imbalances to the construction results.
The sales trend was also positive in the services sector, mainly in tourism-related branches, such as tourism, hotel and transportation agencies, where sales increased at two-fold rates compared to the previous year.
These sectors are mainly benefiting from the positive trend of tourism, which is also growing this year, as evidenced by visitors’ entry and travel expenses to the balance of payments. Meanwhile, trade, which is the largest share in services, marked a more tight growth, up 1.9% compared to the previous year.
