COVID-19 in the Albanian economy / Businesses that will lose and those who will benefit
The spread of coronavirus (COVID 19) in our country can give a blow to the economy, which has begun and may be felt more in the future.
The whole service sector in Tirana and Durres, such as bars, restaurants, pubs, etc., has been shut down, making it impossible for these businesses to collect income for this period, while having a variety of obligations to pay, ranging from rents, taxes, social security and health insurance to employees, despite being out of work.
The tourist industry, hotels, which have had cancellation of tourist reservations in these conditions, have also been hit, and tourist agencies are also facing declining ticket sales due to cancellations of flights to Italy and the US, as well as the fear of citizens to travel during this period.
Effects are also expected to be felt at large manufacturing plants in the country, due to staff reductions for fear of spreading COVID-19. Other businesses of different nature, meanwhile, are experiencing a sales ban due to the isolation of citizens.
The sector that has grown during this period has been retail, mainly in terms of food products and others that are essential to a normal lifestyle.
Fearing the food crisis, in recent days, citizens have flocked to the markets to shop all month long to be safe and prepared for any situation.
While the pharmaceutical companies have also had a boom in sales, due to the measures citizens have taken for equipment with masks, disinfectants, gloves, etc.
