EBRD expected to increase funding to Western Balkans by 30%
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development seems that is aiming to give a hand in the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union.
For this reason, the lending institution is considering raising the region’s funding level by 30%.
In this way, these countries will have more help to undertake reforms that will attract more investment in their efforts to join the union.
This was stated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Suma Chakrabarti, for Reuters from Sofia.
During the Sofia Summit, in addition to a large number of institutions, such as Berzh, the European Investment Bank, etc…
“The Western Balkans is the region that gets the most per capita investment from the EBRD, and we intend to do more. If there are reforms, then the bank will be able to invest more,“ he underlined.
The EBRD is thus considering raising lending at 12.5 billion euros a year, from the current 9.5 billion. These will be in total, ie for all the countries covered by the EBRD.
By the end of the year, it will be estimated that these additional 3 billion euros will go to the Western Balkans.
According to the EBRD, six countries of the region might need up to 200 years to reach the European Union’s standard of living if they do not intervene to promote reforms and improve the level of production of the economy.
