EU heads to receive Albania’s leaders next week for crucial EU accession talks
The Albanian government will conduct next week high-level meetings in Brussels on the possibility of opening accession negotiations with the European Union.
The European Commission’s agenda, seen by SCAN, shows that Prime Minister Edi Rama, Minister of European Affairs and Foreign Affairs Ditmir Bushati, as well as Minister of Internal Affairs Fatmir Xhafaj will be received by the top officials of the union.
The meetings will begin on Monday, when Minister Bushati will meet EC Vice-President Frans Timmermans.
The Foreign Minister will also be received by Dimitris Avramopoulos, the EU Commissioner for internal Affairs and Migration.
These two meetings of the Albanian Foreign Minister precede those of the highest level to be held by the Prime Minister.
On Tuesday, PM Rama will meet the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker as well as Federica Mogherini, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs.
The agenda ends with a meeting between Minister Xhafaj and Commissioner Avramopoulos on Wednesday.
The meetings come at a moment when the government has expressed its optimism for the opening of negotiations next year and following Rama’s letter to the prime ministers of the EU countries.
However, this agenda and especially the meeting with Avramopoulos show that the EU first seeks guarantees from Albania on migration issues.
After the Albanian delegation, Juncker and Mogherini are also expected to receive the Prime Minister of Macedonia Zoran Zaev.
