EU’s boosted IPA funds expected to result in 800m euro for Albania in 2021-2027 period
The EU’s long-term budget envisages a significant increase in IPA funds, including funds dedicated to Albania as one of the beneficiary countries of these funds.
As a result, during the period 2021-2027, IPA funds are expected to reach the figure of 14.5 billion euros.
During the current period, ie 2014-2020, IPA funds are fixed at 11.7 billion euros.
Growth is thus fixed at 23.9%, which translates into a significant increase in paper, but perhaps not significant in practice, given the expected new wave of enlargement of the union, with Serbia and Montenegro at the forefront, and Albania and Macedonia already slated as serious candidates.
These funds are a mechanism of the European Union to fund significant changes inside candidate countries and potentially candidate countries.
At present, the scheme of these funds includes six countries of the Western Balkans and Turkey.
Brussels predicts that during the period 2021-2027 the aforementioned countries will be assisted through this pre-accession mechanism, though many observers had expected a higher figure.
IPA funds are thus projected to account for only 1.27% of the total budget of the European Union during this period of time.
During the 2014-2020 period, Albania is expected to benefit around € 649 million.
If the distribution of money to the new budget will respect the current proportions, then Albania is expected to benefit about 800 million euros.
