Germany hopes for start of EU integration talks with Tirana and Skopje before the end of European Council presidency
Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that she hopes EU accession talks can begin with Northern Macedonia and Albania before Germany’s EU Council presidency ends at the end of the year.
“I hope we can have the accession conference during our presidency of the council,” Merkel said via video link at the end of a meeting in the Bulgarian capital Sofia of the countries involved in the so-called Berlin Process, a forum for co-operation between the EU and Balkans.
Merkel stressed the role that the process has played in “reconciling and overcoming historical tensions and the legacy of the past. You have to say ‘yes’ in the region, to overcome your differences! This is very important”, she added.
Tuesday’s event was co-hosted by EU member Bulgaria and neighboring Northern Macedonia as they seek a solution to their differences ahead of key talks November 17th on Skopje’s EU accession bid.
