3-year gov’t program eyes investments from 500.000 Albanians living in Italy

The Albanian Diaspora will be committed to promoting Albania’s social and economic development by providing the best know-hows, practices and experiences.

This is also the goal of the 3-year program funded by Italian Cooperation, which will focus mainly on the Albanian diaspora in Italy, where there are about 500 thousand immigrants.

The program will support investments and the establishment of new businesses by Diaspora members.

“This project that we are launching today is an example of an institutional will that shows that people’s movement is not faced as an emergency or a threat but is seen in the long-term optics by transforming emigration into economic and social development opportunities. I am convinced that we will soon see results on both sides of the Adriatic and I am confident that with the involvement of all, and especially of the Albanian government, these results will be shared by everyone and will be perceived by the public,” the Minister of State for Diaspora, Pandeli Majko, said.

Majko described Albanians living abroad as an untapped asset and suggested several initiatives for Albanian emigrants all over the world, which are also aimed at absorbing investments in our country.

“We hope that within this month the National Diaspora Agency will become operational, which has passed since last December with a special law in the Parliament of Albania. I believe next week we’ll have the Diaspora law in the Parliament agenda and it is currently being discussed in the Foreign Policy Commission and in the meantime the government has ended the discussion of opinions and will pass to the Council of Ministers the draft Law on Diaspora Development Fund that has to do with the quality of relations in terms of Diaspora investments in Albania.”

About 1.4 million Albanians live abroad, mainly in Italy and Greece and with presence all over the world.
