Internet market – The growth is inhibited in fixed line segment
The expansion of the fixed line internet market has been curbed somehow in the first quarter of the year. According to Electronic and Postal Communications Authority data, the number of fixed line subscribers at the end of the first quarter was about 266 thousand.
However in a long term horizon, the market remains in growth. The number of fixed line internet service subscribers has expanded by 7.5 percent compared to the first quarter of 2016. In one year approximately 20,000 new internet service subscribers have been added.
Growth is even higher in the segment of users with integrated services, including Internet, telephony and television. The number of subscribers receiving at least two of these services at the same time has reached 189,000, an annual increase of 19%.
Out of these, nearly 98,000 subscribers receive three services simultaneously. Including Pay TV platforms has also given a stronger impetus to expanding integrated communications services.
However, still low fixed line penetration remains an obstacle to increasing the number of internet subscribers even outside the country’s urban centers.
On the other hand, the use of the internet is recognizing a rapid expansion through mobile networks. Based on AKEP statistics, there are over 1.76 million Albanians with access to 3G or 4G internet networks.
The number of internet users from mobile networks in one year has increased by 27 %, strongly influenced by 4G technology and the increased use of smartphones.
