Konfindustria calls for joint Albania, Kosovo strategy over Road of the Nation
Konfindustria has declared that a new strategy for maintenance and improvement of the Road of the Nation should be jointly discussed and established as soon as possible by the governments of both Albania and Kosovo.
“The Road of the Nation, including the Kosovo part, is of o multiple vital value for the Albanians. The road was built with a cost of over two billion euros by Albanians on both sides of the border and should be managed as a single asset from Tirana, Durrës to Pristina and beyond in the European corridors. Unilateral solutions that do not foresee economic, political, social influences on the country and province risk to significantly reduce the strategic investment value and produce serious consequences for business and citizens, including unacceptable events such as those of Kalimash Tunnel,” reads a statement issued by Konfidustria administrator Gjergj Buxhuku.
Konfindustria estimates that only a joint decision of Albania and Kosovo governments on how to manage the Road of the Nation Road establishes the basic conditions for reducing maintenance costs, performing missed investments and increasing the economic efficiency of its use.
The statement comes two days after thousands of residents gathered in the northern town of Kukes to demand the cancellation of the tolls being imposed on drivers on the main artery between the two Balkan countries, both of which have ethnic-Albanian majorities.
Demonstrators threw stones and broke toll-collection boxes with bars and set fire to them.
The road fees range in price from 2.50 euros for a motorcycle to 22.50 euros ($27.72) for large trucks.
