Konfindustria slams government’s revamped action against informality
Following the start of the third phase of anti-informality action, Konfindustria has stated that “the new government campaign to fight against fiscal hiding of businesses has few chances to produce lasting long-term results.”
“The good intention of reducing the high level of informality in the Albanian economy, which is at the range of 35-45% of GDP, should be a continuous institutional duty to enforce laws and not just periodical campaigns and division of business categories into so-called “big” and “small” ones,” reads Konfindustria’s press release.
For such initiatives to be successful, according to Konfindustria, they must first be associated with in-depth analysis and a fight against the fundamental causes that produce the high level of informality in the national economy.
“The average tax burden among the highest in the region, complicated procedures stemming from the proportional taxation system, wrong division of business categories and subjective areas of legislation are important reasons that push entrepreneurship and individuals towards informality.”
Konfindustria estimates that, without first addressing the causes outlined above, the new campaign against informality will not be successful at best, and in the most reasonable case it can produce adverse consequences for competition, it will psychologically affect honest businesses and would increase the possibility for corruption and subjectivism of relevant law enforcement institutions.
