Number of foreign businesses in Albania shrank by 5.1% in 2016
The number of foreign-owned enterprises in the Albanian economy has declined during the past year.
According to data from the Institute of Statistics, the number of businesses with participation of foreign capital dropped to about 5,600, down with 5.1% compared with 2015.
In fact, last year recorded a decrease of the total number of active businesses in the economy, with 2.4% less compared to a year ago.
This tendency has also affected the number of foreign enterprises, where the decline is even deeper.
Around 77% of foreign enterprises are small in size, with less than four employed individuals.
Only 308 companies with foreign capital declare more than 50 employees.
In terms of capital origin, the structure of foreign enterprises in the economy is dominated by the Italian ones.
In 2016, companies with the participation of Italian shareholders were 2661 or 47% of the total.
Italy has a profound difference in relation to enterprises of other countries, where Greece comes second with 9%, and come next Kosovo and Turkey with, respectively, 8%.
Compared with 2015, there is a growing trend in the number of Kosovo businesses. According to INSTAT, a total of 442 Kosovo companies are currently operating in Albania.
The structure according to the activity of foreign businesses is similar to the overall enterprise structure in Albania and most are engaged in the service sectors.
Nearly 73% of foreign businesses work in services, while those enterprises working in production are mainly engaged in industry and less in construction or agriculture.
