Pandemic boosts unemployment – Recorded at 11.9 percent in May-June 2020
The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the labor market hard, giving effects on all its indicators. According to official INSTAT data, the official unemployment rate in Albania, for the population aged 15 and over, reached 11.9% for the period April-June 2020, from 11.4 in the first quarter of this year, while it has increased by 0.4 percentage points, compared to the second quarter of 2019.
Of concern is the official youth unemployment rate which reaches 21.4% and in annual terms shows an increasing trend. At the same time, the effects of closing businesses due to measures taken to curb the spread of coronavirus has also had effects in reducing employment.
