Pandemic does not affect construction industry – Slight decline in costs during the second quarter of the year
Construction costs have declined slightly during the second quarter of the year, according to the latest data from the Institute of Statistics. Thus, the construction cost index speaks of a decrease of 0.1 percentage points in the second quarter of the year, compared to the first quarter of the year. Compared to the same quarter last year, meanwhile, there is an increase of 0.4%. These data signal that the pandemic has not had as much of an impact on the construction sector as might be expected.
This tendency has undoubtedly been influenced by the reconstruction process as a result of the earthquakes of September and November last year. In terms of items, the index of cost of materials and that of expenditures for salaries are the ones that have suffered the largest decline, with 1.2% and 1% respectively, compared to the same period a year ago. Other items of expenditure, meanwhile, are reported to increase, such as transport, machinery, etc.
