Pandemic “wrinkles” the number of calls – Albanians used more internet via Wifi

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced Albanian citizens to save even in terms of phone calls and internet use.

According to official data of AKEP, during the period April-June 2020, the number of mobile service subscribers according to SIM cards fell by 2.9% compared to the previous quarter, and a decrease of 9.6% compared to Q2 2019. Also, the decrease of active mobile phone users during this period also reached 2.26 million or 8.6% less than January-March 2020 and decreased by 7.8% less compared to April-June 2019.

On the other hand, it seems that Albanians have not used much of the paid internet from their phones, but have used fixed wifi networks. Thus, according to AKEP data, the number of active users of broadband Internet access from mobile networks in the second quarter of 2020 was about 1.5 million, which is a decrease of 9.9% from the previous quarter, and a decrease of 10.3% compared to the same period a year ago.
