President Meta meets EC’s Juncker: Reform in 5 priorities deemed as crucial for negotiations
The President of the European Commission on the second day of his visit to Tirana held a meeting with President Ilir Meta.
During the meeting, President Meta highlighted the fact that all political forces share the same major goal for Albania’s full integration into the EU, and they are united in their willingness that membership negotiations are opened as soon as possible.
The head of state hopes that thanks to the joint efforts between Albania and the European Commission, member states will be persuaded to open Albania’s accession negotiations during the Bulgarian Presidency in this 6-month period.
Stressing the importance of implementing reforms in the 5 key priorities, President Meta assessed that the results will increase credibility both among Albanian citizens and EU member states.
“Albania has undertaken important steps, but reform must continue with determination. The progress towards joining the EU remains based on merit, quick reforms that can be achieved. It is a joint responsibility of all institutions. We expect that your country will remain a stabilizing factor in the region”, Juncker declared.
Basha expressed the full support of the opposition for opening accession talks with the European Union.
The Democratic Party chair stressed that the opposition believes that the opening of negotiations will provide a strong and independent mechanism for monitoring the level of democracy, respect for human rights and the quality of governance in Albania.
Basha assured Commissioner Hahn for the continued uncompromising commitment of the opposition to the fight against crime and corruption, the constitutional and impartial implementation of the justice reform, and the fulfillment of other criteria for the opening of accession negotiations.
