Property tax suspended until January 1, 2019
Municipalities in Albania are not yet ready to apply the new calculation methodology for property tax that has recently entered into force.
Minister of Finance and Economy Arben Ahmetaj emphasized that this year will be a transitional period, adding that the full application will begin on January 1, 2019.
The new methodology came into force on April 1, although the fiscal cadastre was not ready.
“The property tax has a crystal clear methodology, we have distributed the tables to the municipalities, the property tax is not a new tax, it has not been raised, it is based on value. We will give taxpayers the opportunity to know why they are paying, while local government units will have a better control over the territory, so that we have a transparent tax collections.”
“Local government should have a tighter control The 2018 period is a transitional period that allows local units to prepare better so that on January 1, 2019, all local units may apply property tax based on their value,” Ahmetaj said.
On the other hand, it is still unclear how the billing of citizens will function, whether there will be a collection of taxes for several months together or the municipalities will go on with the old methodology of calculation until each of them will be ready to apply the new one.
