Public debt at 81.3% of GDP! – WB: Albania with the third highest rate in Europe and Central Asia
For the sake of keeping the situation under control, to avoid a severe collapse of the economy, the Albanian government has “sacrificed” some public finances. In its latest report on Europe and Central Asia, the World Bank signals that Albania’s public debt this year and next will be at 81.3% of Gross Domestic Product. The increase is drastic compared to 2019, which is estimated to have had the level of debt compared to national output, at only 68%.
What stands out from this alarming projection of the World Bank is the fact that this rate of 81.3% is the second highest among the countries of the Western Balkans, even by a very significant margin. Moreover, among all the countries in the wider region analyzed, Albania is the third with the highest public debt, better only than Montenegro and Croatia, signals the World Bank.
