Railway renovation – Durrës-Rrogozhina project, costs 52 million euros
Following the Tirana-Durres-Rinas railway line, the Durrës-Rrogozhina line is expected to be launched, giving a new impetus to rail transport in the country. According to the Rehabilitation Feasibility Study of the Durrës-Pogradec line, the segment of 33.5 km from the coastal city to Rrogozhina was selected as a priority, while the cost of rehabilitation is estimated at 52 million euros.
The preparation of the study is enabled by the European Commission, while the Albanian government has decided to pursue the development of the entire railway line rehabilitation project and has therefore recently submitted a request to WBIF for two other technical assistance grants. First, for the preparation of the implementation project for the priority segment from Durrës to Rrogozhina, and the second, for the preparation of the preliminary project, cost benefit analysis and environmental and social impact assessment of the remainder, railway segment from Rrogozhina – Pogradec, including construction of the new 2.8 km line linking Lin with the border of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, the rehabilitation of this segment will meet the design standards of the European Network with a speed of 100km / h and a load of 22.5 tones. Travel time will be reduced from 60 minutes to 32 minutes, while the movement along it is expected to reach 330,000 passengers and 1,100,000 tons of goods by 2047. Estimated value in time saving for users of the Albanian transport system will be EUR 0.65 million for travelers and EUR 15.3 million for freight transport. Additional savings from reducing the cost of operating vehicles in road transport are estimated at EUR 0.5 million for travelers and EUR 8.7 million for freight transport.
