Switzerland unfolds its cooperation strategy with Albania for 2018-2021

With the slogan “Cooperation Goes On”, the Swiss Embassy has presented the economic cooperation strategy between Switzerland and Albania for the period 2018-2021.

In the coming years this cooperation will continue in four priority domains such as:

• Democratisation, Decentralisation and Local Governance (formerly “Democratisation and Rule of Law”)
• Economic Development
• Urban Infrastructure and Energy (formerly in the Economic Development Domain)
• Health (new)

The financial amount of this cooperation will be around 105 million Swiss francs.

Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch, Secretary of State and General Director of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs of Switzerland, told RTV SCAN that this figure is 20% higher than the previous four years.

Although currently there are Swiss investors in Albania their number is still low.

According to the head of the Secretariat for Economic Affairs of Switzerland, Albania needs to implement the judicial reform in order to ensure law enforcement, providing credibility and guarantees to foreign investors.

Trade relations between Albania and Switzerland are good while the value of these trade exchanges amounts to the value of 200 million Swiss francs.

Switzerland’s overall goal in Albania is to support its transition efforts and contribute to effective democratic systems and a socially inclusive, competitive market economy in support of its European integration.

Development work in Albania focuses on four domains and uses a programmatic approach. A new cooperation strategy was launched in May 2014 and will guide efforts until the end of 2017. It builds on past interventions, a wide recognition of Swiss cooperation’s results and a reputation as trusted international partner.

Albania is one of the five priority countries for Switzerland in the Western Balkans together with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia and Serbia.
