The Covid-19 effect on tourism / January-May, the number of foreign visitors has dropped by 60%
So far, the Covid-19 epidemic has reduced the number of foreign tourists by 60% this year. Instat’s data show that for the first five months of the year, only 600,000 foreign nationals visited Albania, down from 1.5 million in the same period last year. Foreign tourism almost stopped in mid-March, with border closed due to the spread of the epidemic.
The paralysis of tourism has a huge effect on the Albanian economy and this is the main reason why Albania is expected to have a deeper economic decline than neighboring economies for 2020. Revenues of the Albanian economy from tourism last year reached nearly 2.1 billion euros, the highest figure ever recorded. Despite the gradual reopening of borders, insecurity is still very high. International tourism during the summer is expected to be quite limited.
However, the hopes of the tourist enterprises are that the effect of the reduction of foreign tourists will be partially balanced by the increase in the number of Albanians who will choose to spend their holidays in Albania. Last year, Albanians spent about 1.6 billion euros on tourism abroad.
