The decline of decline deepens – 62% fewer passengers by air in September and 84% less by sea
September data show that with the end of the summer tourist season, the effect of the pandemic on the transport sector has deepened even further. Thus, the September data published by instat, in terms of passenger air transport, show that, passengers who traveled by air were about 127 thousand, or 62.% less than the same period a year ago. In August, meanwhile, the decline was fixed at 50%.
The deepening of the decline indicates that the sector is far from recovering. The number of passengers who traveled by airline in the first nine months of 2020 is 1,043,457 passengers, decreasing by 59.3%, compared to the first nine months of 2019. The largest decline is currently recorded by maritime transport. During September, only 27 thousand passengers traveled by sea, from over 170 thousand in September last year, down by 84%, according to official data from the Institute of Statistics. Compared to August, the decline during September, in terms of maritime transport is slightly smaller.
