The other side of the coin: Albanians, the poorest in the Western Balkans
While the projections show a situation where Albania is the first in the region, reality tells a different story, placing Albanians in the last spot when it comes to the real economy, ie Gross Domestic Product per capita and wages.
These data have been published by the Vienna Institute for Economic Studies and show how far the country is from Austria, a country taken as the reference economy in this case.
When it comes to GDP per capita, in Albania this indicator is 1/4 of Austria.
In a worse position than the Albanians of Albania are only those in Kosovo in this regard and the Ukrainians.
But Ukraine’s economy is deeply in recession after the recent armed conflict in the country.
As far as salaries are concerned, Albanians are in the penultimate spot, better than the Ukrainians.
Salaries in our country are estimated as much as 30% of Austrians, says Vienna Institute for Economic Studies.
Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro are four-quarters better than Albania in terms of the real household economy, though the recent macroeconomic projections and estimates of the Vienna Institute indicate that Albania left behind these countries in 2017 and will continue to leave them behind in the next three years.
