Tourism in Albania in informality – We are the only country for which Eurostat does not report data
While tourism holds a big part of the Gross Domestic Product of Albania, and while all eyes have turned to the sector as the decisive determinant of the performance of the Albanian economy at a time when the pandemic has caused tremendous damage, this sector is in digital informality. A recent Eurostat publication on tourism for candidate countries has only one news item for Albania; that the figures are completely missing.
In every statistic, Albania is the only candidate country where there are no figures for the capacities of the sector, especially the accommodation capacities. Albania also lacks the number of hotel stays, especially for foreigners, while all countries in the region report this data, and even countries such as Montenegro report periodically, every month.
Our own institute of statistics, meanwhile, reports the last year of 2016 when the figures on accommodation capacity, beds per capita, have been refreshed. Without figures on the capacities of the sector, and especially in the total lack of figures for the flow that these structures face, policy-making and further development of the sector become almost impossible.
