Zagoria Park granted protected area status
Two years after receiving the status of regional nature park, the natural mountain ecosystem of the Zagoria area was proclaimed by the government “Zagoria Natural Park”.
The area covering 24590 hectares will be divided into two subsections of conservation and administration.
The central area, which appears on the map in red and occupies 38% of the park, will include the main forest habitats and shrubs and is designated as a high value area for natural heritage and biodiversity.
This means that in the central area will be applied the highest degree of protection, securing a safeguarded territory.
In this subsection only scientific research, the development of free outdoor ecotourism activities, and seasonal grazing will be allowed.
While the rest of the park is classified as the subdivision of traditional use and includes agricultural lands, pastures and water territories.
It will enable continuation of traditional activities such as agriculture, grazing, gathering of medicinal and aromatic herbs.
No constructions or activities that cause changes to the natural state of the ecosystem will be allowed.
The national authority will allow the construction of infrastructure in this subzone only according to urban and tourist plans that do not affect the ecosystem.
The administration of Zagoria Natural Park will be carried out by the Regional Administration for Protected Areas of Gjirokastra.
Meanwhile, within next May, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment will draft the park management plan.
