Albanian police seize record 613 kg of Colombian-origin cocaine
The Albanian police in cooperation with the Prosecution of Serious Crimes and the Directory of Customs Investigation have successfully concluded the operation code-named Last Snow.
The General Chief of Police, Ardi Veliu, said that the cocaine seized today in Durres was estimated to have a market value of 180 million EUR.
The cocaine was hidden in the floor of a container loaded with bananas.
Veliu stated that the container had come from Colombia, passing through Italy and Malta, and then landed in Durres on February 19.
The police say that the company transporting the narcotics was Arbi Garden operating in the area of Durres and the quantity seized was a record 613 kg of cocaine.
Two 25-year-old citizens, Donaldo Lushaj and Armando Pezaku, were arrested, while the owner of the company is now on the run.
Albania was previously known as a crossroad for the trafficking of marijuana, but a government crackdown has led to a significant reduction in the number of plantations, though regular seizures show that traffickers still have marijuana stored.
