Albanians passed the quarantine with coffee – Customs figures / In March-April 1600 tons were imported
Despite the fact that the bars and restaurants were among the first businesses to close and the last to open, due to the measures taken by the government against COVID-19, it seems that Albanian citizens have passed the quarantine period by consuming more caffeine.
According to official data from the General Directorate of Customs, during the pandemic period, March-April, the import of excise goods such as cigarettes, fuel or beer has fluctuated and decreased, while the import of coffee has increased significantly. Specifically, 589 and 506 tons of coffee were imported in January-February, respectively, while in March there was a significant increase in 676 tons of imported coffee, to reach its peak in April with 922 tons, almost double the January import.
Figures show that the closure of bars has not prevented Albanian citizens from consuming coffee in their homes. What is striking is that there is also a significant increase compared to the same period a year ago, when a total of 2693 tons of coffee were imported in Jana-April 2020 out of 2462 that were imported in 2019.
