Bulgarian PM: We’re trying to persuade skeptics about Albania’s accession talks
Prime Minister Edi Rama received on Monday the Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov.
Bulgaria currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, while Albania’s membership talks were one of the main topics of the meeting.
The Bulgarian Prime Minister confirmed the support for opening membership negotiations with Albania and added that this is the position of most of EU member countries.
However, he acknowledged that some member states are still skeptical about Albania, adding that work is being carried out to persuade them until the end of this month.
“We still have 2-3 states which are skeptical about Albania, but most European countries think that Albania should be given a date and a path to start negotiations, although on condition. We are making great efforts to convince these countries by the end of June,” Borisov said.
Prime Minister Rama said Bulgaria could be an important partner in terms of the technical part of membership negotiations, and said that this country has become a positive example of the ability to absorb European Union funds.
The two prime ministers also participated in the conference on the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, organized under the auspices of King Abdullah II of Jordan.
The meeting, which is held for the first time outside Jordan, is discussing security challenges in the Western Balkans, involving security and political officials from several countries, as well as officials from the Balkans, international partners and the EU.
