EU Delegation: AMA head to be elected in September by new legislature

The Assembly has also planned to vote on the new head of the Audiovisual Media Authority. Shortly before the session, the European Union delegation reacted by suggesting that the election of the new leader be left to the next legislature.
“Media regulatory authorities must work impartially, transparently and with a legitimacy known to all. The European Union has revised the Audiovisual Media Services Directive and introduced new independence requirements for national media regulators, including the obligation to establish transparent and independent procedures for the appointment and removal of the chairman and board members of these authorities. This legislation is part of the EU acquis which Albania needs to adapt.
We have closely followed the process of electing the new chairman and board members of the Audiovisual Media Authority (AMA). It is important that there are no doubts about the non-partisan, professional and pluralistic nature of the AMA’s work.
We note that the vote by Parliament on the appointment of the President is scheduled for today, in the last session of this legislature. We urge the authorities to consider continuing with this appointment during the next legislature in September, together with the appointment of the Authority’s board members, as the best way to reach consensus and widely accepted legitimacy, “the EU delegation said.
