Juncker meets Rama: Recommendation to start Albania’s EU membership negotiations within 6 months
If Albania will do a further progress in the next six months, the European Council might receive a recommendation to start the accession negotiations with Tirana.
This was the comment that the President of the European Council, Jean-Claude Juncker, made in a joint media conference with Albanian PM Edi Rama, while adding that Brussels is impressed by the reforms that were realized in Albania.
“We are at a point when I could recommend the European Council to open the accession negotiations with Albania. The next six months will be essential for the future of your country. We spoke with Prime Minister Rama about the achievements of the past months. We were impressed by the reforms that were realized in Albania”, declared the EC President, Jean-Claude Juncker, adding that he might visit Albania next week.
The Albanian Prime Minister shared the same stance, stating that the next months will be decisive for the future of Albania.
During the day, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama met the Head of EU diplomacy Federica Mogherini.
PM Rama expressed his confidence that Albania will have better results in the upcoming months, hoping for a positive recommendation about the EU accession negotiations.
“I am proud that I am here with better results, and I am certain that there will be even more positive results in the upcoming months”, Rama said.
Mogherini emphasized that Albania has made an extraordinary job in the judiciary reform, as well as in the fight against crime and corruption, while also assuring PM Rama for Brussels’ support for Albania’s EU path.
“It is a pleasure for me to welcome the Prime Minister of Albania in an important moment for the country’s EU path. Under his leadership, Albania has done an extraordinary job, especially as regards the judiciary reform, the fight against organized crime and corruption, a work that we support and that should continue. I am happy that once again we have the possibility to discuss how these steps can turn into a real possibility by early next year”, Mogherini said.
Rama also met in Brussels with the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, and after praising the steps that Albania has taken so far, announced a visit to be held in spring, along with entrepreneurs from EU countries.
Tajani also announced the completion of works for a project in L’Aquila involving the Adriatic countries, including Albania.
“I highlighted the progress of important reforms in Albania that are going in the positive direction for Albania’s accession to the European Union. I refer specifically to the justice reform, which is of great importance and this affects the progress of the Albania-EU relationship.
“We completed the work at L ‘Aquila for an important project for the Adriatic countries, including Albania, with important results. This project is important for moving towards the EU”. Tajani stated.
