NCB and Credins dominate lending to the Albanian economy

NCB (BKT) and Credins were confirmed as the most active banks in lending to the private sector for 2016.

According to unaudited data from the Albanian Association of Banks, NCB (BKT) and Credins further increased their market share in lending, while Raiffeisen Bank and Intesa Sanpaolo experienced another year in decline.

At the end of last year, NCB (BKT) had a loan portfolio amounting to Lek 129 billion. This amount gave it a market share of approximately 21.7%, from 19.8% that it was at the end of 2015.

Raiffeisen Bank retained its position as the second largest creditor of the economy, with 18.5% of the total, but in decline from the level of 19.6% a year earlier.

Credins continued its growth trajectory even last when it had a loan portfolio amounting to Lek 94.5 billion.

Credins’ market share increased to 15.9% from 14.9% in 2015.

The other banks, for the moment, are quite behind.

Intesa Sanpaolo has renounced since several years its aggressive growth and last year its market share shrank again to 7.6%, from 7.7% that it was a year ago.

Meanwhile, Societe Generale Albania continued its growth last year, becoming the fourth largest bank in terms of loan portfolio value.

Societe Generale owned 7.9% of total lending to the economy, replacing Intesa Sanpaolo in the fourth place.

Other banks, in the vast majority, last year marked a passive year in lending.

Three Greek banks – Tirana Bank, Alpha Bank and NBG Bank – experienced a further loss of their market share, and a similar performance was reported by Veneto Bank and ProCredit Bank.

Among the few banks that expanded its activity last year was Union Bank, which increased its loan portfolio to 3.1% of the total lending to the economy.

This proves that 2016 was dominated by banks with strong domestic base, while the banks of the eurozone groups, with few exceptions, have renounced aggressive growth and are continuing their consolidation strategies.
