Public debt at a record level / Exceeds 80% of GDP, due to COVID-19 and the earthquake
The two consecutive shocks that the Albanian economy received, such as the November 26 earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic, have produced a public debt at historic levels in the country, exceeding the figure of 80 percent of GDP, as a necessity to respond to these situations.
According to official data from the Ministry of Finance, in the first half of the year, the total stock of public debt reached 1.26 trillion, or 80.02 percent of GDP, from about 65.8 percent of GDP at the end of 2019. Of the total borrowing stock, about 40.4 percent of GDP is domestic and 39.6 percent of GDP is external. The biggest impact on debt growth was given by the issuance of the new Eurobond of 650 million euros.
