Transport of goods recovering, increased in March by 39.1%: INSTAT

The volume of goods loaded and discharged at Albanian ports during March increased by 39.1% compared with the same month in 2016, thus reaching 345 thousand tons.

The most part of this amount, 92.8%, passed from the port of Durres.

This increase in freight volume led to an increase of 8% in the period covering January-March 2017, after a decline of over 6% during January-February.

Meanwhile, an increase has been also reported by rail freight transport, increasing by 250% from the previous March, but, however, it remained in very low numbers in absolute terms and at a decreasing level on a year-on-year basis.

Rail transport has decreased from 399 thousand tons of cargo in 2007 to 76 thousand tons in 2016.

March marked an increase of 19.4% compared to 2016, in terms of the number of passengers traveling with airlines.

However, this increase in the number of passengers has contributed very little to the increase of the number of flights, which increased by just 5.6% compared with March 2016.

This indicator is expected to grow further with the recent entry in the market of low-cost lines, especially during summer, when there is a “boom” as far as flights are concerned.

The number of passengers who chose to travel by maritime transport in March decreased by 3.8%, to about 50 thousand people.

This form of transport is also popular during summer, when it exceeds the number of air transport passengers.

This phenomenon is not expected to change even this year, due to the relatively lower prices of ferry tickets for passengers traveling to and from Italy.
