Transport of goods reaches the lowest levels in last 10 years: INSTAT
Volumes of shipping goods last year reached the lowest levels of the last decade. According to the Institute of Statistics, the transport of goods decreased both in the sea routes and rail system in 2016.
For last year, the volume of shipping goods fell to 3.75 million tons, 2.2% less compared to a year ago.
The decline in freight transport in foreign trade is mostly indicative of mineral exports crisis, considering that this sector has the largest share in terms of volumes.
In monetary value, mining exports for last year fell by 28% and imports by 17%.
The decline in shipping volumes continued in the first two months of this year.
According to INSTAT, for the first two months of the year, the volumes of unloading goods from Albanian ports have fallen by 6.4%.
Meanwhile, an even deeper fall was suffered last year by the railway transport of goods, which came down to 76 thousand tons, 62% less compared to 2015.
The decline in volumes of rail transport is mainly related to the slowing activity of the company Kurum, which in early 2016 launched a bankruptcy procedure, as a result of short-term inability to settle multiple debts.
Although it has a limited extent, rail transport is important for the industry, as it offers lower costs compared to road transport.
