Exports of Albanian tangerines on the rise! ‘Eurofruit’ writes about the trend of recent years
Tangerine exports increased significantly in the first weeks of last December, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. Official data from the export center in Vlora show that the country exported 1,600 tons during the week of December 11-17.
According to the “See Export Consultancy Network”, mandarin exports have increased significantly in the last decade. In 2010, the country produced 5,000 tons of mandarins but could not be exported. But in 2019, production went to 31 thousand tons, of which 14 thousand were exported.
Although Albania is one of the smallest countries in Europe, it aims to weigh in on agricultural production thanks to the favorable Mediterranean climate. Data from the Ministry of Agriculture show that Albania has exported more than 112 thousand tons of fruits and vegetables in the first 6 months of 2020 with a value of 51.7 million euros.
Grapefruit production has tripled in the last decade, from 13,336 tonnes in 2010 to 50,882 tonnes in 2019.
The cultivation of tangerines in Saranda dominates the sector and is one of the most profitable agricultural activities in Albania. Production is concentrated on well-organized farms and cooperatives using modern cultivation methods. Exports are mainly to regional markets such as Kosovo, Northern Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Ukraine.
