Internet banking: Number of users reaches record figure of 322,000
The number of bank accounts connected to the Internet has recorded a strong growth during 2017. According to data from the Bank of Albania, now there are 322 thousand accounts that are accessed through the internet banking service, 54% more compared to 2016.
The increase is also substantial in the degree of use of the service.
In 2016, only 6% of accounts were accessed from the internet, while at the end of 2017 this ratio reached 10.3%.
Although Albania continues to lag behind in these services, significant progress has been made in recent years, also thanks to a gradual improvement of financial literacy.
According to the Bank of Albania, since years the number of bank accounts has exceeded the total number of the population, which indicates that on average every resident of Albania has at least one bank account.
During 2017, the total number of customer accounts in the Albanian banking system reached 3.14 million.
Compared to 2016, the number of bank accounts has dropped by nearly 10%.
However, it is believed that this has happened due to a cleansing of inactive accounts that were not used for a long time.
About 94% of active banking accounts belong to individuals.
The number of non-residents’ accounts is increasing, as at the end of last year it reached about 32 thousand, an annual increase of 11%.
