Loan portfolio increase – The main contribution was given by the postponement of payments
The main factor that has influenced the growth of the loan portfolio for the second quarter of the year is the suspension of the payment of existing loans. According to the calculations of the Bank of Albania, this factor has provided 70% of the contribution to the annual credit growth. According to the Bank of Albania, credit to the private sector increased by about 6.8% in the second quarter of 2020, a rate similar to that recorded a quarter earlier.
If the installment payment had been made normally, with the same level of new credit, then the portfolio growth would have been approximately 2%. Periodic repayment of loans normally has an effect on reducing the loan portfolio, for the repaid part of the principal. Non-payment in recent months has made this factor less influential and the existing portfolio depreciated less.
