Number of restaurants and bars declines by 4.8%
In Albania, at least until December 31, 2017, there were 20,488 companies operating in the restaurant and bar sector.
The previous year, meanwhile, this figure was fixed at 21484.
This is a significant decrease of 4.8% on an annual basis.
Considering the effect of market formalization as a whole, this decline is even more significant.
The accommodation, food and beverage sector, which, in addition to bars and restaurants, includes hotels, is estimated to employ some 52,000 people according to 2016 data.
Without hotels and other housing services, which are a bit more than 1000, the declared figure of the employees in this sector ranges in a little less than 50 thousand people.
At least, this is the figure that its businesses operating in the sector declare to the tax department.
The sector, including accommodation, declares an annual turnover of ALL 43.5 billion, which translates to about 340 million euros annually.
But the effect of high informality should also be calculated.
This is one of the most problematic sectors in terms of the grey economy.
However, the annual turnover of the sector is 2.31% of the country’s gross domestic product.
