Pandemic hits retail – Only food, beverages and tobacco on the rise in Q2
Retail sales in volume fell by 8.3% during the second quarter compared to the same period last year. The second quarter coincides with the time when the pandemic hit the economy hardest, paralyzing almost every sector of it and every aspect of our daily lives. According to Instat data, compared to the first quarter of the year, meanwhile, the decline is fixed at 6%.
The only growing share is that of food, beverages and tobacco, where retail sales increased by 1.4% during the second quarter of the year, compared to the second quarter of last year. The biggest decline, meanwhile, is recorded in the retail trade of hydrocarbons, with 18.5%, where it seems that the biggest impact was given in March and April with the blocking of mass circulation for vehicles and other motor vehicles. The category of non-food items also recorded a decline in sales of 8.7%, according to official data from the Institute of Statistics.
