Taking debt to eat and repair the houses! – How the earthquake and pandemic affected Albanian families
About 23 percent of Albanian families state that they have a loan to pay. Referring to the Bank of Albania survey for the first six months of the year, it seems that the November 26 earthquake and the Covid-19 pandemic have given their effects in this regard. Thus, in 32 percent of cases, the loan was taken for consumption, which reflects unemployment and declining incomes during this period, in 36 percent for the purchase and repair of property and 10 percent of cases for business development.
Regarding the level of necessary expenses during this period, it seems that Albanian families have significantly reduced the pace. Thus, about 53% of them declare monthly expenditures at the level of ’20 -50 thousand ALL ‘and this weight has decreased by 4 pp compared to the previous 6 months, while about 20% declare expenditures at the level of ’10 -20 thousand ALL’ and this weight increased during the period by 3 pp.
