Albania-Macedonia interconnection line: Power carrier TSO signs consultancy agreement
Albania’s Transmission System Operator has signed a consultancy service agreement on the 400 kV Albania-Macedonia interconnection line project.
The funding of this project was provided by the German-Albanian Development Cooperation, where the German government has already committed funds for a development loan up to 50 million euro.
In addition, a grant from the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) of 13.7 million euro is available to cover the full funding of the project.
While, around EUR 1.13 million have been committed for the drafting the main design.
The consulting service will be carried out by the German company “Fichtner GmbH and Co” and will cover the first phase of project drafting and the implementation phase to be carried out in two lots.
The project envisages the construction of a 400 kV line with a circuit between Elbasan and Qafe-Thana (Albanian-Macedonian border) and the construction of a 400 kV line with a circuit between Elbasan and Fier.
The project also foresees the new 400 kV Elbasan 3 substation as well as strengthening and expanding the Fier substation.
According to the TSO, the project reinforces the interconnection links with the regional electricity network, creating conditions for trade exchanges and unrestricted transit of electricity in the region.
It also develops the 400 kV network in the southern part of Albania where future electricity sources of electricity are foreseen.
Meanwhile, as part of the infrastructure of the Eighth European Corridor, the project creates good opportunities for connections through undersea cable with Italy.
Project implementation contracts are scheduled to begin during the first quarter of 2019.
